Humax is teaming up with Opera Software to market high-definition set-tops capable of delivering both live TV channels and Web video content. The set-tops, similar to TiVo’s Premiere DVR, are available initially in the Middle East. The DVRs feature the Humax TV Portal, which offers content from YouTube, Twitter, Facebook and Flickr. More
- Spanish cable operator Ono began deploying TiVo’s hybrid set-tops in Madrid and Barcelona, allowing subscribers to access a combination of digital video channels and broadband video content. Virgin Media has deployed similar DVRs from TiVo in the United Kingdom, and U.S. cable overbuilders such as RCN and Grande Communications are also marketing hybrid TiVo DVRs to their customers. More
- Cox Communications president Pat Esser said the Atlanta-based cable MSO will launch an app for Apple’s iPad which will allow subscribers to access 35 cable networks on the tablet. Similar to iPad apps from Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks and Cablevision, the iPad app from Cox will only allow subscribers to watch live TV channels if they are within reach of a WiFi router connected to their digital cable set-top. - Four cable technology vendors are teaming up to pitch operators TV Everywhere solutions. Verivue said it will partner with itaas, RGB Networks and Verimatrix to supply distributors with an integrated solution that uses Verivue’s content delivery solution, RGB’s transcoding and packaging solution, DRM technology from Verimatrix and mobile client application and services from itaas. - Western Digital said it will add casual games from connected TV content provider PlayJam to its streaming video media players. Western Digital, which also manufactures external storage devices, already offers premium online video content through its WD TV media players from Netflix, Hulu Plus, Blockbuster, CinemaNow, Pandora, YouTube, Facebook and Spotify.
